The term ‘off road’ has no standard industry definition

There are many types of caravan in Australia. Instead of describing caravans by shape or size, the Caravan Buyers Guide describes them by capability. Here’s how the Caravan Buyers Guide explains them:

Caravan Types

Confused by the term ‘off road’ caravan? Keen to know your pop top from your teardrop? The Caravan Buyers Guide ditches the misleading term ‘off road’ and instead divides caravans into four easy to understand categories:

Category 1 – Light Duty CaravansCaravan Type 1Small, standard touring vans suitable for bitumen road and light dirt road use.

 ________________

Category 2 – Medium Duty CaravansCaravan Type 2Medium to large sized, standard touring vans suitable for bitumen road and limited light dirt road use. More extensive features (such as ensuites) than Category 1 vans.

  ________________

Category 3 – Heavy Duty CaravansCaravan Type 3

Vans suitable for any made and graded 1st, 2nd and 3rd class roads. They can be used on corrugated roads over short distances if towed with care.

  ________________

Category 4 – All Terrain CaravansCaravan Type 4Vans suitable for use in any terrain that can be travelled safely and sensibly by the tow vehicle.

 ________________

We hope that the caravan industry will discuss and eventually adopt these new category definitions to make life easier for caravan consumers and manufacturers alike.
